History of the Brillion Fire Department
Returning from a Service Call
The Brillion Fire Department is an independent volunteer-based department. It provides contract service to the Town of Maple Grove and areas east of Bastian Road in the Town of Brillion. The Brillion Fire Department also participates in the Calumet County Mutual Aid Agreement and has mutual aid agreements with the Village of Reedsville, Hollandtown, Collins, and Wayside.

The Brillion Fire Department was founded on January 16, 1882 to protect the settlement of Spring Creek from fire (later the settlement was named "Brillion.") The charter members gathered enough money to buy a used hand pump from the fire department at Two Rivers, Wisconsin. They then reorganized into two different departments - the Hook and ladder Company, and the Hand Engine Company.

Many years later, resulting in more technological advances, the two companies reunited to form a stronger department.

Annual Events
The BFD is most famous in the Brillion Community for holding its annual Mid-Winter Brat Fry. The tradition started in 1967 and has since become one event residents and neighboring communities look forward to attending. Local industries and businesses also get in the spirit by donating items for raffle drawings. Monies raised go toward equipment and educational items for the Brillion Fire Department.

Currently the department has 35 firefighters, 2 lieutenants, three captains, 2 Battalion Chiefs, 1 Deputy Chief, and three chief officers. The Fire Department has two pumpers, one 1998 Pierce 75 foot heavy duty aerial ladder, two 1994 Newton 2000 gallon tankers, and one International heavy rescue truck equipped with a command light tower and the jaws of life resue tools.

The BFD meets the first Monday of the month for meetings, and the 3rd Monday of each month for drills. The members participate in a variety of firefighting certifications, such as Firefighter I and II, driver operator training, HAZMAT awareness, operations training, fire inspection, fire investigation, company officer certification training, and fire education during Fire Prevention Week.
